A Beautiful Explanation on Death...

A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to
leave the examination room and said ,
'Doctor, I am afraid to die.
Tell me what lies on the other side.'
Very quietly, the doctor said, 'I don't know.'
'You don't know?
You Do not know what is on the other side?'

The doctor was holding the handle of the door ;
On the other side came a sound of scratching and whining ,
And as he opened the door , a dog sprang into the room
And leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.
Turning to the patient , the doctor said ,
'Did you notice my dog?
He's never been in this room before.
He didn't know what was inside.
He knew nothing except that his master was here ,
And when the door opened , he sprang in without fear.

I know little of what is on the other side of death,
But I do know one thing...

I know God is there and that is enough.'

May today there be peace within you.
May you trust God that you are exactly
Where you are meant to be.
I believe that friends are quiet angels
who lift us to our feet when our wings
have trouble remembering how to fly.

Thought For The Day

In rendering service, one should have no thought of one’s self. One should only consider how well one can render the service as an offering to the Divine. One should note the difference between Karma (action) and Karma Yoga (action as spiritual discipline). Ordinary activity is motivated by self interest or the desire to achieve some objective. In Karma Yoga, the action is desireless. Ordinary Karma is the cause of birth, death and rebirth, whereas Karma Yoga leads to freedom from birth. You should regard all service as a form of Karma Yoga – rendering service without any expectation of reward, and without even the feeling that one is ‘serving’ others. Any service done to anyone is actually service to the Divine.

Telugu Wedding...

INTRODUCTION

Comprising the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, Hyderabad is the Capital of Andhra Pradesh. It is famous as the center of the fabulously wealthy Nizams of Hyderabad. Andhra Pradesh is known as the Cyber State of India. Andhra Pradesh has a rich and varied cultural heritage.

The customs, rituals, traditions and conventions are unique to the state. It has hordes of treasures in the form of artistic dance forms, theatre performances, different local festivals etc. Andhrites are progressive minded hardworking people who have their roots entrenched deep in culture. The royal influence of the state lends a colorful aura to its people and their affairs. And, wedding is no exception. Andhra weddings are as zany and glitzy as the palace of Nizam and IT industry blooming in Hyderabad.

MARRIAGE THROUGH THE AGES

Telugu people interpret marriage in terms of one's sacred step in one's spiritual growth. It is not contractual as in many ways religious. The wife is considered to be ardhangini, a part of her husband, literally meaning 'half of the body'. No religious ritual can be performed by a man without his wife.

MATCH MAKING

Telugus marry within their community only. A Brahmin would marry off his daughter to a Brahmin only. Match between Brahmin and non-Brahmin is not generally made unless the girl or the boy is exceptional. Matches are tried to be made by word of mouth among known people. If it doesn't work only then, advertisement in the newspapers are given.

COSTUMES

Bridal Wear

The dress code for the bride is a saree - mostly a red one or any other similar bright color. She would gold and pearl jewellery. Pearl is exceptional as it is a Hyderabadi specialty. The bride would also wear flowers in hair.

Groom's Attire

The grooms of Andhra Pradesh wear the South Indian dhoti and a shirt in their style only. In case the groom is Brahmin, he would not wear the shirt during marriage

RITUALS

Rituals Before Marriage

Muhurtam

Muhurtam is a ceremony wherein an auspicious period of the day is chosen for the marriage. It is mostly the period of evening hours i.e.7-11 pm. The Telugu marriage rites are basically Hindu marriage rites only.

Pendlikoothuru

Pendlikoothuru takes place a day or two before the marriage. In this the boy and the girl are smeared with oil and turmeric. They take bath and each wears new clothes. The girl wears a saree and the boy would wear a dhoti. Also the girl is asked to wear flowers on her hair and bangles. All the assembled married women are presented with the betel leaves, sweets, flowers and bangles. This gifting is done to ensure the married ladies bless the to-be married girl and wishes her to become a part of their group.

Snathakam

Snathakam is an important ritual that takes place a few hours before the actual Muhurtam. It involves only the bridegroom as he has to wear a silver thread on his body.

Kashi Yatra

Kashi Yatra is an unique ceremony which has the boy saying at the end of the thread ceremony that he has discarded the worldly pleasures and going to Kashi. This strange but very relevant ceremony is called "KashiYatra" or the journey to Kashi. To stop him from the symbolic departure to Kashi, the girl's brother requests him to stay on. For this he also offers his sister in marriage.

Mangala Snaanam

Mangala Snaanam or the auspicious bath takes place on the wedding day, at dawn. This bath is taken by both the bride and the groom individually. Such a bath implies the purification of one's physical self before proceeding for the marriage rituals.

Aarti

The Aarti ceremony is peculiar to the Indian marriages. It features in almost all the marriages, may be in a different form everywhere. It has the family members applying the groom and the girl with oil and doing aarti around them. It is done for several reasons, one could be to safeguard the couple from bad planetary influences, bad omens and other evils.

Gauri Pooja

After having the bath, the bride worships the goddess Gauri. Gauri is the Mother Durga who symbolizes divine power, energy, woman power, fertility, etc.

Ganesh Pooja

When the bride is performing the Gauri Puja, the groom at the same time performs the Ganesha puja. Ganesha puja is considered auspicious for any important occasion as it ensures the success of the work at hand.

Marriage Rituals

Kanyadaan

The Telugu marriage ceremony is striking as well as fabulous. It has the girl's mama or the maternal uncle carrying the bride in a bamboo basket to the mandap (wedding place). The bride is well adorned in a bright coloured saree and precious jewellery. As per custom the girl would carry some betel leaves, betel nuts, a coconut, a sandalwood stick and a red pumpkin. The procedure of the marriage is such that a curtain is placed between the bride and groom, so that they do not see each other till the wedding is completed.

At the end of the marriage, the father and mother of the bride clean the boy's feet with water. It is more so done with the view that the groom is considered as a form of God. In most of the Hindu marriages, the groom is equalled to the god and the giving away of daughter in marriage to him is regarded as gifting the most loved thing of yours to Lord Vishnu himself. Also is associated with the ritual is the practice of gifting a virgin to the groom who is no less than Vishnu. In a way it also means that the parents are blessing the daughter with a husband who is as good as the God.

Madhuparkam

Madhuparkam would have the boy and the girl wearing a white dhoti and sari respectively, with a red border. The garments are of cotton.

Mangalsutra

The Mangalsutra is generally a golden chain with alternate black beads and chain. It is worn by the married women in a number of communities in India. In the Telugu community, the groom ties the Mangalsutra around the neck of the bride with three knots.

Kanya Daan Akshata

At the end of the Mangalsutra ceremony, the couple put garlands around each other's necks. And all those assembled shower flower petals and rice. This is called Akshata, the offering of uncooked, turmeric-coloured rice.

Saptapadi

Saptapadi is a ceremony that has the bride and the groom taking seven steps together around the fire. In each round they utter mantras which add to strengthen the marriage. As they take the pheras, the bride's saree and groom's dhoti ends are tied into a knot.

Rituals After Marriage

Griha Pravesh

Griha Pravesh is a very common marriage ritual, wherein the bride is made to enter the groom's house with all rites and fanfare. The two mangalsutras are united on a common thread 16 days after the wedding, with a few black or golden beads between the two plates, so that they do not clash with each other. This symbolizes harmony between the two families. The number 16 is considered a divine number in Hinduism and 16 days are symbolic of the time period that the bride has taken to know and understand her husband's family. As is common with most Hindu ceremonies, the bride takes a bath and wears a new sari. Any elder from the family, or the husband himself then unites the two mangalsutras on a common thread

CELEBRATIONS

Music & Dance

Music is considered to be divine in the South Indian states. Every state believes in having music being played in the background during auspicious occasions such as wedding, thread ceremony, etc. During the marriage especially, Carnatic music is being played in the entire period when the marriage is going on. And Nadaswaram is being specially played. Also, tunes of classical songs pertaining to the various rituals are played at the appropriate times.

Cuisine

The Telugus of Andhra would start off a feast with a special pachadi made of several ingredients like neem leaves, jaggery, bananas, sugar cane and tamarind. The cuisine of Andhra has two equally popular parallel cuisines - spicy non-vegetarian Mughlai dishes, and the primarily vegetarian Telugu Brahmin food - the dosas and its cousins! All with sambar.

SOME STRANGE CUSTOMS

  • Jeelakarra-Bellamu
Jeelakarra-Bellamu is a rare ritual especially featuring in the Telugu marriage, wherein a paste of cumin seeds and jaggery is made. The bride and the groom apply this paste on each other's hands. The idea behind applying the cumin seeds and jaggery paste is that the two different objects coming together and united as one inseparably and forever

Top 20 Languages in the World...Where does Telugu Stand ?

The table below presents speaker estimates for the world's top 20 languages (given in millions). The first column lists the languages on the basis of the number of mother-tongue (first-language) speakers they have. The second column gives population estimates for those countries where the language has official status. Note that the totals do not always coincide, since some major languages (such as Telugu and Javanese) are not official languages of whole countries, and some languages (such as Malay and Tagalog) are official languages of multilingual countries. The second column figures are often over-estimates, as by no means everyone in the countries where a second language is recognized (e.g. India) will be fluent in it. The figures are of some interest as indicators of the way languages are moving.

Thought For the Day

27th September 2009

It is best that you imprint on your heart the dual nature of the world that is a mixture of pleasure and pain, joy and grief, victory and defeat. Practice the constant presence of God and learn to offer all your activities at the feet of the Lord as an act of worship. Then they will be cleansed of all faults. Life sustained by food is short; life sustained by Atma is eternal. Do not lay claim to long life, but to divine life. Do not strive for more years of stay on the earth, but for more virtues in the heart.

Thought For The Day

25th September 2009

The world is made up of objects. It is inert. In the waking sense, the senses cognise all these objects. But the senses are also inert. The eyes that see, the ears that hear, the tongue that speaks and the nose that smells - all of them are Jada (inert). In fact, the entire body is inert. But all these inert objects are able to function because of the presence of Chaitanya (consciousness) in the mind. Thus we have to realise that the entire phenomenal universe is Jada.

Benefits of Eating Durian...

Durian is a little known fruit from Asia that has an extremely pungent smell and an amazingly sweet taste. The smell of the durian fruit is so bad that many hotels in the areas where durian grows will not allow their guests to have the fruit in their rooms. But those who brave the smell are quickly won over by its beautiful taste and amazing health benefits. Unlike most fruits the durian is left to fall from the tree as this is a sign that it is ripe to eat. People in the local villages of South East Asia, where the durian is most common, call it "The King of Fruits," and they will clear the floor under the trees near to harvest time and then camp near them for up to two months just to make sure they get the fruit at its peak. This is a truly exceptional and healing fruit.

Health Benefits of Durian

Traditionally the durian fruit was seen as a powerful aphrodisiac, while women would eat the ashes from burnt durian skins to help them recover after child birth. But concoctions made from the leaves of the durian tree were also used to help reduce swelling and cure skin disease. More recently nutritionists have claimed that the durian fruit can help lower cholesterol and cleanse the blood as well as cure jaundice and alleviate fevers.

Experts even say that you can rid yourself of yeast infections such as thrush through eating the durian fruit. This is because of the durian's high iron content that helps the white blood cells in our body make specific chemicals that kill off the infection.

The durian is also packed with amino acids as well as Vitamins B, C and E and many people are even comparing the sweet custard like centre of the durian fruit to the goji berry for its high levels of anti oxidants. These anti oxidants help slow down the destruction of cells from free radicals such as pollution and smoking; in doing so, they decrease the effects of aging on the skin giving you a younger more refreshed look.

Among the amino acids found inside the durian is tryptophan... Tryptophan is essential for making and maintaining serotonin levels in the body. Serotonin is the hormone in the body that regulates our happiness. People with low serotonin levels tend to have short tempers, are often moody and suffer from depression. This means that not only will eating the durian fruit help keep your body running smoothly but it will also increase your general happiness and well being.

The Power of Positive Speech by APJ Abdul Kalam (Must Read)

I remember my dad teaching me the power of language at a very young age. Not only did my dad understand that specific words affect our mental pictures, but he understood words are a powerful programming factor in lifelong success.

One particularly interesting event occurred when I was eight. As a kid, I was always climbing trees, poles, and literally hanging around upside down from the rafters of our lake house. So, it came to no surprise for my dad to find me at the top of a 30-foot tree swinging back and forth. My little eight-year-old brain didn't realize the tree could break or I could get hurt. I just thought it was fun to be up so high.

My older cousin, Tammy, was also in the same tree. She was hanging on the first big limb, about ten feet below me. Tammy's mother also noticed us at the exact time my dad did. About that time a huge gust of wind came over the tree. I could hear the leaves start to rattle and the tree begin to sway. I remember my dad's voice over the wind yell, "Bart, Hold on tightly." So I did. The next thing I know, I heard Tammy screaming at the top of her lungs, laying flat on the ground. She had fallen out of the tree.

I scampered down the tree to safety. My dad later told me why she fell and I did not. Apparently, when Tammy's mother felt the gust of wind, she yelled out, "Tammy, don't fall!" And Tammy did. fall.

My dad then explained to me that the mind has a very difficult time processing a negative image. In fact, people who rely on internal pictures cannot see a negative at all. In order for Tammy to process the command of not falling, her nine-year-old brain had to first imagine falling, then try to tell the brain not to do what it just imagined. Whereas, my eight-year-old brain instantly had an internal image of me hanging on tightly.

This concept is especially useful when you are attempting to break a habit or set a goal . You can't visualize not doing something. The only way to properly visualize not doing something is to actually find a word for what you want to do and visualize that. For example, when I was thirteen years old, I played for my junior high school football team. I tried so hard to be good, but I just couldn't get it together at that age. I remember hearing the words run through my head as I was running out for a pass, "Don't drop it!" Naturally, I dropped the ball.

My coaches were not skilled enough to teach us proper "self-talk." They just thought some kids could catch and others couldn't. I'll never make it pro, but I'm now a pretty good Sunday afternoon football player, because all my internal dialogue is positive and encourages me to win. I wish my dad had coached me playing football instead of just climbing trees. I might have had a longer football career.

Here is a very easy demonstration to teach your kids and your friends the power of a toxic vocabulary. Ask them to hold a pen or pencil. Hand it to them. Now, follow my instructions carefully. Say to them, "Okay, try to drop the pencil." Observe what they do.

Most people release their hands and watch the pencil hit the floor. You respond, "You weren't paying attention. I said TRY to drop the pencil. Now please do it again." Most people then pick up the pencil and pretend to be in excruciating pain while their hand tries but fails to drop the pencil.

The point is made.

If you tell your brain you will "give it a try," you are actually telling your brain to fail. I have a "no try" rule in my house and with everyone I interact with. Either people will do it or they won't. Either they will be at the party or they won't. I'm brutal when people attempt to lie to me by using the word try. Do they think I don't know they are really telegraphing to the world they have no intention of doing it but they want me to give them brownie points for pretended effort? You will never hear the words "I'll try" come out of my mouth unless I'm teaching this concept in a seminar.

If you "try" and do something, your unconscious mind has permission not to succeed. If I truly can't make a decision I will tell the truth. "Sorry John. I'm not sure if I will be at your party or not. I've got an outstanding commitment. If that falls through, I will be here. Otherwise, I will not. Thanks for the invite."

People respect honesty. So remove the word "try" from your vocabulary.

My dad also told me that psychologists claim it takes seventeen positive statements to offset one negative statement. I have no idea if it is true, but the logic holds true. It might take up to seventeen compliments to offset the emotional damage of one harsh criticism.
These are concepts that are especially useful when raising children.

Ask yourself how many compliments you give yourself daily versus how many criticisms. Heck, I know you are talking to yourself all day long. We all have internal voices that give us direction.

So, are you giving yourself the 17:1 ratio or are you shortchanging yourself with toxic self-talk like, " I'm fat. Nobody will like me. I'll try this diet. I'm not good enough. I'm so stupid. I'm broke, etc. etc."

If our parents can set a lifetime of programming with one wrong statement, imagine the kind of programming you are doing on a daily basis with your own internal dialogue. Here is a list of Toxic Vocabulary words.Notice when you or other people use them : -

Ø But: Negates any words that are stated before it.
Ø Try: Presupposes failure.
Ø If: Presupposes that you may not.
Ø Might: It does nothing definite. It leaves options for your listener..
Ø Would Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't
actually happen.
Ø Should Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't
actually happen (and implies guilt.)
Ø Could Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen but the person tries to take credit as if it did happen.
Ø Can't/Don't: These words force the listener to focus on exactly the opposite of what you want. This is a classic mistake that parents and coaches make without knowing the damage of this linguistic error.

Examples:

Toxic phrase: "Don't drop the ball!"
Likely result: Drops the ball
Better language: "Catch the ball!"
Toxic phrase: "You shouldn't watch so much television."
Likely result: Watches more television.
Better language: "I read too much television makes people stupid. You might find yourself turning that TV off and picking up one of those books more often!"

Exercise:

Take a moment to write down all the phrases you use on a daily basis or any Toxic self-talk that you have noticed yourself using. Write these phrases down so you will begin to catch yourself as they occur and change them.

Thought for the Day

24th September 2009

From time to time, the Divine power assumes numerous forms. In devotees, it shines as the Jnana-Agni (fire of wisdom). In non-devotees, it burns as Krodha-Agni (the fire of anger) or the Kama-Agni (fire of desire). Man today has this fire (of anger, etc) in his heart and has become a victim of fear and delusions. All other types of fire subside in due course of time, but these fires (of anger, etc.) never completely cease. They may flare up at any moment. How, then, are these fires to be extinguished once for all? Vairagya (detachment) and Prema (love) are the two requisites to extinguish these fires. It is only through Prema (love) that man can acquire peace.

Diamond Studded Crown for Balaji ?

TIRUPATI : Karnataka tourism minister and Bellary mine baron Gali Janardhan Reddy will probably be better known for something else: with an offering of a diamond-studded crown worth Rs 45 crore, he became the biggest donor to Lord Venkateswara at Tirupati since the Vijayanagara kings 400 years ago.

The 20-kg stunner was a ``thanksgiving'' gesture, the minister said. Sources added that 32kg of `aparanji (pure)' gold went into its making, besides 70,000 diamonds weighing 4,000 carats. The 2.5-ft crown has a huge 890-carat emerald from Africa engraved in the centre which alone costs around Rs 10 crore.

The crown will be placed the Lord's idol during Abhishekam seva on Friday morning. It was earlier kept in the Vaibhavotsava Mandapam in Tirumala and special pujas were performed. After a ritual called Sahasra Deepalankara seva, it was taken around on a procession along with the deity, Lord Malayappa Swamy. Around 7pm, the crown was taken inside the sanctum sanctorum.

Keertilal Jewellers of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu took nine months to fashion the crown.

There are no records of more expensive donations to the temple and Gali's donation is considered as the costliest gift offered to the Lord after the Vijayanagara kings in the 16th century. The Vijayanagara kings ruled from Hampi not far from modern day Bellary ...

With this offering, the total number of crowns placed with the Lord has gone up to seven. This precious crown has been added to the jewel treasury of Lord which holds over 11 tonnes of gold ornaments and vessels.

``I am in this position only with the blessings of Lord Venkateswara. This is only a small offering to the Lord. I believe in Madhava seva (service to the Lord),'' said Gali, who owns several iron ore mines.

The minister said his Brahmani Steels, once it starts operation, would employ 25,000 people. ``This I consider as manava seva (service to mankind),'' he said. Andhra Pradesh chief minister YSR Reddy's son Jagan has a large stake in Brahmani Steel that is coming up in the Andhra chief minister's home district.

Thought For The Day

23rd September 2009

Man is a part of the human community. Mankind is a part of nature. Nature is a limb of God. Man has not recognised these inter-relationships. Today men are forgetting their obligations. The Cosmos is an integral organism of interrelated parts. When each one performs his duty, the benefits are available to all. Man is entitled only to perform his duties and not to the fruits thereof. Man is a kind of stage-director of what goes on in Nature. But forgetting his responsibilities, man fights for rights. It is foolish to fight for rights without discharging one's duties. All the chaos and conflicts in the world are due to men forgetting their duties. If everyone discharge their duties diligently, the world will be peaceful and prosperous.

Thought For The Day

22nd September 2009

Faith can grow only by long cultivation and careful attention. Have faith; faith will grant you all that you need. There is not task that I cannot accomplish. You have faith in Lord Rama and Krishna, since you have read books written about them. You have not demanded direct proofs of Divinity from them. Have you? Have faith first, then you will get proof enough. Take up the discipline of the recital of the Name. Why drag out your existence as a mere consumer of food? Eat, but transform food into good deeds, good thoughts, sweet speech. Move, but do not cause pain to others or add to their misery.

Thought for the Day

21st September 2009

Illness, both physical and mental, is a reaction on the body caused by poisons in the mind. An uncontaminated mind alone can ensure continuous good health. Vices breed disease. Bad thought, bad habits and bad company are fertile grounds in which disease thrives. A sense of elation and exultation keeps the body free from ill-health. The evil habits in which people indulge, are the chief causes of disease, physical as well as mental. Greed affects the mind; disappointments make people depressed. You can justify your existence as a human being only by the cultivation of virtues. Then you can become a worthy candidate for Godliness. It is progress in virtue that announces the progress of man towards divinity. Virtues also confer freshness, skill and long years of youthfulness.

Selamat Hari Lebaran...

Hari Raya Aidilfitri (also seen as Hari Raya Idul Fitri and Hari Raya Puasa, literally "Celebration Day of Fasting") is the Malay term for the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Fitr. Hari Raya is also known as Lebaran. Muslims in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines celebrate Eid like other Muslims throughout the world. The term "Hari Raya" literally means "Day of Celebration" — it is also occasionally used to refer to Eid ul-Adha in the form of "Hari Raya Aidiladha". The main greeting used by Muslims in Malaysia and Singapore is "Selamat Hari Raya" which means "Happy Eid" in Malay. Another greeting is "maaf zahir dan batin" which translates loosely to "I seek forgiveness (from you) physically and spiritually", for Hari Raya is a time to reconcile and renew relationships with others.

During the Muslim month of Ramadan leading up to Hari Raya, it is mandatory for Muslims to fast from dawn to dusk. All Muslims except the young, old or infirm must fast. Muslims must also abstain from pleasures such as smoking cigarettes and sexual activities during the daylight of the fasting month.

Widely, markets, or 'Ramadan bazaars' are held in many areas around the country, where all sorts of food and kuih — traditional Malay delicacies — are sold for breaking fast or buka puasa. Hotels and restaurants have also exploited this situation to offer exorbitant Ramadan buffets. This practice of overindulging has been criticised by Muslim clerics, notably the mufti of the state of Kelantan.

On the eve of Hari Raya, Muslims will recite the takbir, which is held in mosques and surau (smaller place of worship). In some communities, there will be congregations reciting the takbir from house to house.

In big cities and towns, shopping malls and commercial centres will hold big promotions and price discounts for festive shoppers as people purchase clothes and supplies. Decorations are hung in public areas and Hari Raya songs will be played in shopping complexes. The media, such as the television will host various programs in conjunction with the celebrations.

Many people also traditionally return to their hometown generally from big metropolitan cities to rural areas. This is known as balik kampung — literally going back to one's home town to celebrate Hari Raya with family and friends. At many times, the flux of vehicles on the roads nationwide increased the number of car accidents, including deadly ones, occurring during the festive season. Road safety campaigns are often launched by the authorities ahead of the festivities in the effort of lowering the discomforting number of accidents.

Usually on the eve of the celebrations, family members, especially mothers and housewives, will be busy preparing food, cakes, sweets, biscuits and various delicacies to be served on the day of Hari Raya. Delicacies such as ketupat or rice cake and a meat cuisine called rendang are among the most famous cuisines that are served during this day. Other family members will help in other chores such as decorating and cleaning up the house.

Days before Hari Raya, house compounds, particularly those in the countryside will be lit up with oil lamps known as pelita or panjut. This display of oil lamps will reach its height on the 27th night of Ramadan, called the Tujuh Likur night. 'Likur' literally meaning a figure between 20 and 30, hence 'tujuh likur' means twenty seven. Originally during the early days of the arrival of Islam among the Malays, the purpose of lighting the oil lamps was to attract spirit of passed relatives and angels to descend to people's homes during the night of Lailatulqadar. However after ages has passed, such misconception is regarded counterfactual as much understanding of Islam were obtained. Nowadays the oil lamps are lit solely for decorative purposes.

It is customary for Malays to wear traditional Malay costumes. The dress for men is called baju Melayu while the women's are known as baju kurung and baju kebaya. Traditional textiles such as songket and batik are worn favourably during this day.

Muslims will attend Eid prayer in the morning and consecrate together harmoniously while taking the chance to meet and greet each other. Once the prayer is done, it is also common for Muslims in Malaysia to visit the grave of their loved ones. During this visit, they will clean the grave, perform the recital of the Yasin — a chapter (surah) from the Qur'an and also the tahlil or prayers for the deceased. All these are done in hope that their loved ones are blessed by God and they are spared from the punishment in the grave.

The rest of the day is spent visiting relatives or serving visitors. Hari Raya is a very joyous day for children for this is the day where adults are extra generous. Children will be given token sums of money, also known as duit raya from their parents and elders.

During the night, there are often celebrations with sparklers and firecrackers, albeit restrictions on playing firecrackers enforced by the authorities. Most firecracker stocks are purchased and smuggled illegally from black markets. Safety issues, especially among children are raised and alarming cases relating to injuries caused by playing firecrackers are often reported, which initially led to the banning of playing firecrackers. Despite of the enforcement of banning firecrackers, more Malay children turn to home-made firecrackers such as meriam buluh (bamboo cannon) as alternatives to commercial fireworks. Usually the lighting of firecrackers begins a few days before the end of Ramadan, and continues for about a week afterwards

Thought For the Day

20th September 2009

People imagine that spirituality means meditating on God , bathing in sacred waters and visiting holy shrines , but this is not the correct meaning of spirituality. Spirituality means destroying the animal nature in man and awakening him to his divine consciousness. Spirituality implies recognizing that one’s manifold capacities emanate from the Spirit and not from the mind, then utilizing them for achieving spiritual strength. It means acknowledging that all powers come from the Divine.

It is only God , the embodiment of love , who is always with you and in you. Bereft of love , man cannot exist. Love is your life. Love is the light that dispels the darkness of ignorance. One who does not cultivate love will be born again and again. Punarapi Jananam Punarapi Maranam. Whoever is born will die one day and whoever dies will be born again. Birth and death are the Prabhava (effect) of the objective world. As he is deluded by the Prabhava, man is subjecting himself to Pramada (danger).

Puratasi & Navarathri

The month of Puratasi is closely associated with Lord Venkateswara (Lord Vishnu). It is also believed that Lord Venkateswara came to the earth in the month of Puratasi (Puratassi) as Balaji. In 2009, Puratasi month begins on September 17 and ends on October 17.

The Saturdays of the month are auspicious and are dedicated to pleasing Shani (Saturn). It is believed that Shani loses its powers on Saturday.

Several devotees of Balaji only take a meal during the Saturdays of this month. They also spend the Saturdays praying to Lord Vishnu. Special pujas are offered in Vishnu temples in South India during the month.

This years' puratasi month is double auspicious as Navarathri too falls in the month of Puratasi.

Navarathri

Navrathri is celebrated all over the world for nine days during the month of Purattasi (September-October). It is a celebration of the victory of Goddess Durga or Paraskthi over the demon king Mahishasura. On the tenth day Vijaya Dhasami, the day of victory , is observed with all religious fervor. Symbolically it is said to be the victory of good over evil.

Mythological significance of Navarathri

Worship of Goddess Parasakthi is rooted firmly in India.Sakthi is considered the embodiment of Supreme Power- according to Devi Mahatmiyam, a sacred book on the Avatar (incarnation) of Parasakthi she is the all pervading power of devotion, peace, wisdom, rest, hunger, shadow, thirst, patience, bashfulness, luster, wealth, scriptures, compassion, happiness and fear.

According to Devi Mahathmiyam (from Markandeya Purana), Parasakthi is the embodiment of Icha Sakthi, Kriya Sakthi and Gnana Sakthi and is the better half of the Supreme God , and She takes various forms as Parvathi, Lakshmi, Saraswathi and Durga in different Avatars.

The Avatar of Parasakthi, according to Hindu mythology is described like this: When the Devas were troubled by the Asuras, they took it to the Lords- Siva, Vishnu and Brahma. The anger of gods against the Asuras took the form of a bright light which spread all over the universe and later appeared in the form of a woman who shone brilliantly.

While Lord Siva created a Thrishul out of his own, Mahavishnu created a wheel out of his Chakrayudh and all the Devas followed suit by giving armour to Devi. Devi Parasakthi, armoured and bedecked with beautiful ornaments fought with the demons, destroyed the evil and regained peace.

In India , the victory of Goddess Durga is celebrated for nine days. The festival is called Sharada Navarathri. In the month of Purattasi, after the Mahalaya Amavasya, starting from the first day of the lunar month, till the Vijayadasami day the state takes a festive look, with many homes displaying beautiful dolls of Gods and Goddesses, in steps or tiers. This festival is also called 'Kolu' which means the Ambal or Ambigai.

In a symbolic way of worship, besides the daily pujas, and special Aarthis, women folk (Sumangalis) of the neighbourhood are invited to these houses and offered Thamboolam (betel leaves, flowers and vermilion).Young girl children are also given a warm welcome as many consider them as a form of Devi Herself.

Positive Words...1

One rainy day , a mother went to pick her girl up from school , thinking that the girl will fear the lightning. On the way , she found her daughter smiling at the sky for every lightning. She asked her why she smiled ?

The little girl said "God is taking my photo , so i have to look good. Thats why i smiled."

So smile when problems threaten you , and do not fear of anything , FOR GOD IS ALWAYS WITH YOU !

Have a great day ahead.

Thought For The Day

18th September 2009

What is Mano-Nigraham (control of the mind)? Nigraham (control) really means being indifferent to the vagaries of the mind. It is difficult to control the mind, just as it is difficult to confine air in one's grasp. How can anyone control the mind which is all-pervading in the vastness of its range and comprehension? When it is realised that the mind is made up of thoughts and doubts, the elimination of the thoughts is the means of restraining the mind. Thoughts are associated with desires. As long as desires remain, one cannot have Vairagya (detachment). It is necessary to limit desires. When there is no restraint, excessive desire becomes an evil. It leads to misery. When we strive to control desire, in due course, it develops into Vairagya (non-attachment or renunciation).

Lawyer's Joke...1

One afternoon a wealthy lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass.

Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate.
He asked one man 'Why are you eating grass?'

'We don't have any money for food ,' the poor man replied 'We have to eat grass.'

'Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you',the lawyer said.

'But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree'

'Bring them along,'the lawyer replied.

Turning to the other poor man he stated, 'You come with us also.'

The second man ,in a pityful voice then said, 'But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!'

'Bring them all, as well,' the lawyer answered.
They all entered the car , which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was.

Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, 'Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.'

The lawyer replied, 'Glad to do it.You'll really love my place ; the grass is almost 1 metre high!'
